Job Description:
The Institute of Film and Media Studies at Boğaziçi University invites applications for several faculty positions in the fields of film studies, moving image studies, and global screen cultures. The appointments will be at the rank of Assistant Professor and we offer full-time positions, with the anticipated start date of Fall 2026, subject to administrative and budgetary approval. The institute seeks colleagues who can show evidence of excellence, or promise of excellence, in teaching and scholarly productivity at the highest international standards. Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in film studies, moving image studies, global screen cultures, visual culture, or a closely related field by the time of appointment. They should also demonstrate the ability to teach and supervise students at both undergraduate and graduate levels and have a distinguished record of excellence in research and a substantial research agenda. Boğaziçi University has a strong tradition of interdisciplinary studies, thus we seek candidates who can connect with other disciplinary and interdisciplinary efforts at the university. As part of a newly established institute, the selected candidates will have opportunities to further the institute’s mission and vision toward graduating students prepared to make positive contributions to global society through film and media arts; interact with existing faculty in their research; develop specialized courses in their own areas of interest; and work in a collaborative academic environment with faculty members who are open to a range of perspectives and who are committed to supporting the needs of our students. The language of instruction at Boğaziçi University is English. Boğaziçi University adheres to the salary regulations applicable to public universities in Türkiye. Faculty salaries are determined by the state and are subject to biannual adjustments. The final salary is also commensurate with the faculty member’s academic rank, qualifications, and professional experience. Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled. Required Qualifications:
The successful candidates will:
• Possess a PhD degree in film studies, moving image studies, global screen cultures, visual culture, or a closely related field.
• Have demonstrated excellence and achievement in developing, designing, and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses and programs.
• Be able to teach courses in English with native or near-native fluency.
• Display a high level of dedication and enthusiasm for their academic pursuits, research endeavors, instructional practices, and administrative duties.
• Show evidence of a strong research background and the ability to produce peer-reviewed publications.
• Have published a minimum of two major scholarly works, at least one of which must be an article in a journal indexed by the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI), or Arts & Humanities Citation Index (AHCI).
• Communicate effectively with faculty members, staff, and students.
• Have a commitment to collaboration and an appreciation for flexibility in a developing context.
Desired Qualifications:
Priority will be given to candidates with:
• Post-doctoral experience in a related research field.
• Teaching experience in a globally recognized and reputable university or a comparable institution.
• Record of attracting research funding to support an active research program.
• Previous experience of developing or working in interdisciplinary research teams.
• Contacts with global networks of film scholars and/or film industry professionals.
• Practical experience in film production or professional background in film industry.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The successful candidates will:
• Teach undergraduate and graduate-level film studies courses.
• Contribute to the development of the institute’s curriculum and programs.
• Mentor undergraduates and supervise dissertations of graduate students.
• Conduct scholarly research resulting in publications in peer-reviewed academic journals.
• Participate in university, faculty, and institute activities and service.
• Perform other administrative tasks, duties, and responsibilities as assigned.
• Follow the code of conduct established by Boğaziçi University.

Areas of Specialization:
We are committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body and welcome applicants who study the art of film from a variety of perspectives. While the search is open field, we are especially interested in candidates with strong research and teaching profiles in at least two or more of the following areas:
• Film historiography and research methods in film studies
• Global film history
• Art history, contemporary art theory, and visual culture for film and media students
• Studies in regional, national, transnational, and diasporic film cultures (esp. European, East European and Russian, Hollywood, West Asian aka Middle Eastern, North African, Latin American, East Asian, and migrant film cultures)

• Classical and contemporary film theories
• Film analysis and criticism
• Narrative film: history and theory
• Documentary film: history and theory

How to Apply:

• A cover letter clearly indicating the position for which the applicant wishes to be considered and explaining how the applicant’s interests, qualifications, unique skills, perspectives, and programmatic areas can contribute significantly to our institute’s scholarly activities in research, teaching, and service.
• An up-to-date curriculum vitae highlighting the applicant’s career achievements, areas of research, teaching experience, list of publications and awards/honors, as well as research grants and students supervised.
• A concise research statement articulating the applicant’s three-year research plan and detailing the intended projects to be pursued, envisioned resources, and external funding ideas to allow executing the research plans (maximum 2 pages).
• A teaching philosophy statement and portfolio describing the applicant’s own core approach to teaching and learning, explaining how the applicant understands his or her role in the classroom, and detailing the applicant’s teaching experience (maximum 2 pages).
• Sample syllabi for at least one course.
• Two samples of the applicant’s most significant scholarly work (article- or chapter-length writing samples).
• Copies of transcripts, certificates, and degrees.
• Contact information of three referees including their names, titles, positions, current institutions, telephone numbers, and email addresses. Candidates will be required to provide three letters of recommendation, at least one of which should report on the applicant’s teaching abilities, if shortlisted and invited to attend the interview stage of the selection process.

About the Institute:
Boğaziçi University’s Institute of Film and Media Studies was established in 2024 with the goal of launching Türkiye’s first English-language graduate programs in the fields of film and moving image studies, global screen cultures, media studies, digital cultures, contemporary media arts, and sound studies within a public university. The Institute will initially offer a master’s program, with plans to expand into doctoral studies in the coming years. It also hosts an undergraduate-level Certificate Program in Film Studies, offering historical, theoretical, and practical courses. Both the certificate and graduate programs are designed to equip students with the analytical and methodological tools necessary for conducting rigorous historical, theoretical, and critical inquiries into film texts, moving image aesthetics, screen cultures, contemporary media art practices, creative industries, digital cultures, sound studies, and audience studies. Through comprehensive and interdisciplinary coursework, students are encouraged to explore their intellectual potential, engage in research on specialized topics, and develop strong analytical thinking skills.
