In November 2024, Boğaziçi University’s Institute of Film and Media Studies will honour the distinguished career of Dame Maggie Smith with a special film screening programme, “A Legendary British Actress of Stage and Screen: The Cinematic Legacy of Maggie Smith (1934–2024).”
The programme serves as a tribute to Smith, who passed away on 27 September 2024, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy across film, theatre, and television. Spanning several decades, Smith’s work earned her acclaim in roles that ranged from the complex Miss Jean Brodie in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969) to the beloved Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter series and the acerbic Dowager Countess of Grantham, Violet Crawley, in the Downton Abbey television series and films, captivating generations with her iconic performances. The November screenings will feature twelve of her most memorable films, including A Room with a View (1985), Gosford Park (2001), and The Lady in the Van (2015).
Smith’s remarkable career saw her receive multiple awards, including two Academy Awards, five BAFTAs, three Golden Globes, four Primetime Emmy Awards, five Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a Tony Award, underscoring her versatility and talent. Known for her sharp wit and layered portrayals, Smith’s performances were deeply influential, showcasing her unique ability to blend dramatic intensity with humour.
This month’s screenings offer students an opportunity to revisit Smith’s cinematic legacy, reflecting on the indelible impact of a British icon who elevated each role with elegance and profound insight.
