Boğaziçi University’s Institute of Film and Media Studies presents its April film screening program, “Film Adaptations: Jane Austen’s Life and Literary Oeuvre on Screen.” This month’s program explores the enduring legacy of the English novelist Jane Austen through cinematic adaptations of her celebrated novels and biopics inspired by her life.
The retrospective brings to the screen major works such as Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), Emma (1816), Northanger Abbey (1818, posthumous), Persuasion (1818, posthumous), and Lady Susan (1871, posthumous). Through these films, viewers are invited to witness how Austen’s sharp social commentary, ironical voice, and intricate depictions of courtship and class continue to resonate in modern storytelling.
Jane Austen’s novels, written in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, deftly navigated the social constraints of her time, especially concerning women’s reliance on marriage for financial and social security. Though published anonymously during her lifetime, her works have achieved canonical status in English literature and inspired generations of adaptations.
The program also features biographical films such as Becoming Jane (Julian Jarrold, 2007) and Miss Austen Regrets (Jeremy Lovering, 2007), which explore the nuanced dimensions of Austen’s personal life—shaped by a supportive yet restrictive family environment, formative experiences of love, and the enduring challenges of being a female writer in a patriarchal literary landscape.
This curated selection not only celebrates Austen’s literary genius but also examines how filmmakers across decades have reimagined her characters, themes, and historical settings, offering fresh perspectives on gender, class, and authorship.
