Boğaziçi University’s Institute of Film and Media Studies proudly presents its March 2025 film screening programme, “Short Films from Great Directors,” a celebration of the art of short filmmaking through the works of some of cinema’s most visionary storytellers.

This carefully curated selection offers audiences a rare opportunity to explore the early experiments, stylistic signatures, and thematic preoccupations of master filmmakers, featuring works by Luis Buñuel, Jean Renoir, Buster Keaton, François Truffaut, Agnès Varda, Albert Lamorisse, Chris Marker, Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, Tim Burton, Pedro Almodóvar, and Wes Anderson. Spanning multiple decades and cinematic traditions, these films provide insight into how short-form storytelling has shaped the careers of legendary directors and influenced the evolution of global cinema.

The screenings encompass both fiction and non-fiction films, showcasing the richness and versatility of the short format. Among the fiction selections, François Truffaut’s Antoine and Colette (1962)—a semi-autobiographical sequel to The 400 Blows (1959)—captures the director’s youthful infatuation with a free-spirited young woman. Pedro Almodóvar’s The Human Voice (2020) reimagines Jean Cocteau’s iconic monologue with Tilda Swinton delivering a raw and emotionally charged performance. Meanwhile, Wes Anderson’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (2023) adapts Roald Dahl’s whimsical tale with Anderson’s signature visual precision and meticulous storytelling.

On the non-fiction side, Agnès Varda’s Along the Coast (1958) offers a lyrical journey through the French Riviera, blending documentary with poetic imagery. Chris Marker’s La Jetée (1962), a groundbreaking work composed almost entirely of still photographs, delivers a haunting meditation on time, memory, and fate. Martin Scorsese’s Italian-American (1974) presents an intimate portrait of the director’s parents, weaving personal history with reflections on immigration and identity.

By bringing together these landmark short films, the programme seeks to illuminate the artistic, historical, and cultural significance of short-form storytelling, affirming its place as an essential and enduring part of cinematic expression.
