Boğaziçi University’s Institute of Film and Media Studies continues its exploration of seasonal cinema with the July 2025 screening program, “Summer and Holiday Films 2”. This carefully curated program brings together a wide range of films that delve into the emotional, psychological, and sensory dimensions of summertime. Far from portraying summer as a mere interval of leisure and sunlight, these films reveal the season as a liminal space—where time loosens, desires intensify, and identities shift. From romantic wanderings and fleeting encounters to existential awakenings and buried tensions, the selections for this month trace how cinema has long used the summer as a canvas for transformation.

The monthly screening program opens with William Wyler’s Roman Holiday (1953), a beloved tale of escapism and transient romance, and Éric Rohmer’s Pauline at the Beach (1983), a nuanced study of youthful curiosity and adult contradictions by the sea. As the program unfolds, the films turn inward. Ingmar Bergman’s Summer with Monika (1953) and Michelangelo Antonioni’s L’Avventura (1960) strip away the illusions of freedom to confront disillusionment and isolation, using sunlit settings to heighten internal unease. Lucrecia Martel’s The Swamp (2001) harnesses the oppressive heat of an Argentine summer to reveal the inertia and decay of a family teetering on the edge.

Toward the end of the month, the tone becomes more playful yet no less reflective. Dirty Dancing (1987) and Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) dramatize rites of passage and emotional awakenings set against idyllic summer backdrops. Palm Springs (2020) reimagines the summer holiday as an absurd yet profound time loop, blending comedy with existential dread. Meanwhile, The Go-Between (1971) and A Bigger Splash (2015) explore memory, repression, and emotional tension within sun-drenched but psychologically charged landscapes.
