Boğaziçi University’s Institute of Film and Media Studies presents a famous trilogy of contemporary cinema in its April 2024 film screening program.

The “Before” trilogy, directed by Richard Linklater and starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, comprises three American romance films that captivate audiences with their genuine characters and improbable romance. Beginning with Before Sunrise (1995), where Jesse and Celine meet on a train to Vienna and spend a magical night together, the trilogy evolves over nine-year intervals with Before Sunset (2004) and Before Midnight (2013). Each film delves deeper into the complexities of Jesse and Celine’s relationship, exploring themes of love, time, and the passage of life. With minimalistic yet profound dialogue, the trilogy captures the essence of postmodern romance, garnering widespread critical acclaim and commercial success. The chemistry between Hawke and Delpy, combined with Linklater’s masterful direction, creates an intimate and compelling cinematic experience that resonates with audiences long after the credits roll.
