Boğaziçi University’s Institute of Film and Media Studies presents a curated selection of films from the Brazilian New Wave Cinema, known as “Cinema Nōvo (New Cinema),” in its March 2024 film screening program.
This film movement, spanning from the early 1960s to the early 1970s, united influential figures such as Glauber Rocha, Nelson Pereira dos Santos, Paulo César Saraceni, Joaquim Pedro de Andrade, Leon Hirszman, Carlos Diegues, Ruy Guerra, and Arnaldo Jabor, in response to the cultural and social dynamics of Brazil. Drawing inspiration from Italian Neorealism, French New Wave, and Soviet cinema, Cinema Nōvo aimed to produce aesthetically innovative films with strong political messages, challenging the established norms of Brazilian cinema. Against the backdrop of significant class and racial disparities and political turmoil, notably the 1964 military coup, Cinema Nōvo directors delved into themes of poverty, marginalization, and the struggles of the working class, diverging from the conventions of Hollywood-style epics and light-hearted comedies. Despite grappling with constraints such as limited financial resources and distribution channels, Cinema Nōvo films offered a raw and introspective exploration of Brazilian society, particularly in rural settings. Cinema Nōvo declined in the 1970s, but its legacy endures, paving the way for a more socially conscious Brazilian cinema and influencing filmmakers worldwide with its blend of artistic innovation and political engagement. Through classics from directors like Ruy Guerra, Joaquim Pedro de Andrade, Glauber Rocha, and Leon Hirszman, the programme provides a captivating glimpse into this pivotal era of Latin American cinema.
