The film screening program for February 2024, organized by Boğaziçi University’s Institute of Film and Media Studies, presents a meticulously curated selection of films from the Soviet Thaw Cinema, known as Kino Ottepeli.

The program explores the cinematic corpus of the “Thaw” period, marking the cultural and political liberalization that occurred after Stalin’s death in 1953. Nikita Khrushchev’s Thaw period witnessed a reduction in ideological pressure, leading to the removal of censorship and restrictions on free artistic expression. Prominent figures and visionaries of the Thaw generation include esteemed names such as Mikhail Romm, Mikhail Kalatozov, and Fridrikh Ermler, distinguished masters who rose to prominence during the silent film era. Additionally, war veterans and filmmakers such as Marlen Khutsiev, Grigoriy Chukhray, Aleksandr Alov, Vladimir Naumov, Mikhail Shveitser, and Vladimir Vengerov, confronted with limited opportunities after World War II, alongside emerging talents like Andrei Tarkovsky, Larisa Shepitko, and Andrei Konchalovsky, who, as war survivors, became protégés of the second generation. Despite its conclusion due to political constraints, the Thaw era left an indelible mark on Soviet filmmaking, catalyzing increased production, technological advancements, and the cultivation of a new generation of filmmakers. Focusing on the classics of influential directors such as Mikhail Kalatozov, Grigoriy Chukhray, Marlen Khutsiev, and Larisa Shepitko, the program offers a captivating insight into this pivotal chapter of Soviet cinema, characterized by artistic innovation, social introspection, and global engagement.
