The film screening program for January 2024, organized by Boğaziçi University’s Institute of Film and Media Studies, presents a selection of films from the Japanese New Wave film movement, known as Nūberu Bāgu in Japanese.
Spanning the late 1950s to the 1970s, this cinematic revolution signified a profound departure from traditional Japanese filmmaking norms. Visionary directors such as Nagisa Ōshima, Seijun Suzuki, Masahiro Shinoda, and Shōhei Imamura led a rebellion against censorship, employing unconventional editing and experimental storytelling to delve into taboo subjects within a society undergoing post-World War II transformations. Originally rooted in Japanese studios’ efforts to revive the film industry amidst the television boom, the movement underwent an independent evolution as young directors pursued authentic artistic expression.
The Japanese New Wave films boldly pushed the boundaries of storytelling, incorporating non-linear narratives and surreal elements. Despite its corporate origins, the movement’s enduring legacy resonated globally, influencing filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino, Jim Jarmusch, Nicolas Winding Refn, John Woo, and Chan-wook Park. Beyond being a mere film movement, the Japanese New Wave emerged as a revolutionary force that redefined cinema, engaging with societal issues with analytical and philosophical depth, thus leaving an indelible imprint on the rich history of Japanese filmmaking.
The screenings will take place every Wednesday at 18:00 at Mithat Alam Hall throughout the month of January and are free of charge, offering students the opportunity to explore this film movement that has deeply influenced global film history.
