Boğaziçi University’s Institute of Film and Media Studies launches its June 2025 film screening program, “Summer and Holiday Films 1,” with a thoughtfully curated selection that explores how cinema captures the textures of summertime and the emotional terrain of holidays.
Far from serving merely as a backdrop of sunshine and leisure, summer in cinema often signals a threshold—between youth and adulthood, freedom and responsibility, illusion and disillusionment. It is a time when routines loosen, identities blur, and temporary escapes open the door to lasting transformation. These films embrace the season not only for its visual warmth, but for its narrative potential: moments of rest become moments of reckoning.
From golden afternoons by the sea to quiet walks through unfamiliar cities, summer and holiday films often drift between lightness and melancholy, joy and unease. Jacques Tati’s Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday (1953) sets the tone with its playful attention to vacation rituals and subtle disruptions of social order, while Charlotte Wells’ Aftersun (2022) transforms a Turkish resort stay into a haunting reflection on memory and grief. Richard Linklater’s Before Midnight (2013) and Éric Rohmer’s The Green Ray (1986) capture the philosophical weight of passing time and summer encounters, revealing how even idle conversations can carry existential weight.
Ultimately, this program invites viewers to consider summer not simply as a season of relaxation, but as a cinematic metaphor for longing, loss, and discovery. In these films, the holiday becomes a liminal space—where nothing happens, and everything does.
