Boğaziçi University’s Institute of Film and Media Studies kicks off 2025 with an enchanting cinematic journey into urban landscapes through its special film screening programme, “Urban Space and Cinema: Woody Allen’s London.”

This January, students are invited to explore the unique relationship between cityscapes and cinematic storytelling, as captured in Woody Allen’s tetralogy of London-based films. Known for his long-standing association with New York, Allen’s shift to the British capital offers a fascinating lens on modern London’s character, blending architectural elegance with emotional depth.

From the aristocratic charm of Belgravia to the cultural vibrance of the Tate Modern, these films portray London as both a visual marvel and a stage for human drama. Whether it’s the intricate social web spun in Match Point (2005) or the sharp wit of You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger (2010), Allen’s London is rendered both romantic and ruthlessly honest—inviting viewers to reconsider the city’s cinematic identity.

As the screenings unfold, students will not only revisit Allen’s cinematic craftsmanship but also witness London through an outsider’s perspective—transforming its streets, galleries, and parks into vibrant narrative spaces. Whether a film enthusiast or a casual viewer, this month’s film screening programme promises a rich exploration of urban identity and cinematic artistry.
